The great cereal box domino challenge!

Our school challenge is to create a giant domino chain through the school with cereal boxes. All of the boxes will be donated to the food pantry after we complete the challenge. If you are able, can you contribute a box of cereal to the challenge?

Reminder - tomorrow is our first trip to the Scanlon Creek Discovery Play Garden. The weather is suppose to be beautiful, but please check tomorrow morning and dress accordingly. We leave at 9:00 and we will be back in time for pizza lunch.

We are learning about Chickadees this week.

We read Chickadee: Criminal Mastermind

We have been inside so much this week - we took advantage of the dry weather to learn outside a lot today!

 May 1 - 7th is children's Mental Health Week and it is kicking off a whole month of focus on mental health here at Aurora Heights Public School. To start off, we set our intentions for the week in our community circle. Here are some examples;

"I will help the JKs"

"I will share."

I will listen to others."

"I will say 'You can play with me!'"

In our ongoing bird inquiry, we are learning and wondering about robins this week.

We learned today that a robin's song sounds like "cheerio! cheerio!" So our sound of the week is the "ch" sound. What words can you think of that start with "ch"? Can you think of words that end with "ch"?

We read the story Nesting and learning about the whole life cycle of a robin.

This week we are taking turns looking at a real robin's nest. 

And a real robin's egg!

Then we make observations and ask questions.

We had two guest teachers leading us in the flower game today. Maybe you could teach your family at home how to play the flower game?

I received a lovely thank you note and these pictures from the folks at the Food Pantry.

They absolutely LOVED including our messages of kindness in with the food given to families.

 Today we read Hoot Owl!

We found "oo" words in the book;

• Hoot
• Swoop
• Food

We talked about how "oo" can make two different sounds!

This week (and for the next few weeks) we are working on some "off-line" coding.

Can you help Owl get to the nest? Show her how.

Are there other ways she can get to the nest?

What if there are trees in the way? Now can you help her get back to the nest?

How many ways?

 For outdoor learning we were using our eyes and ears to find birds. 

Can we find more birds with our eyes or our ears? 

We set out to find the answer to this question by counting how many birds we heard in 2 minutes and then counting how many birds we saw in 2 minutes.

We did a tally chart to track. 

We compared.

"We heard many more birds than we saw."

We made some hypotheses as to why we heard more than we saw.
