For Thankful Thursday we talked about the different foods we are thankful for.

We read the story "Matzah Ball Soup"

Can you remember why Rosie's family put exactly four matzah balls in each bowl of soup?

What a busy, fun day today!

For outdoor learning, we did some math- sorting and graphing.

After examining our mittens, we decided that we could sort them by with fingers (gloves) and without fingers (mitts) and we put them in piles.

After some discussion about which pile had more, we counted each pile. Then we realized that if we lined them up we could see which one had more without even counting! Without naming it- we created a graph.

There was also some outdoor soup making.

On our way back inside we noticed that the wall was very warm - even though it was quite cold out.

Why?

"I think the sun is warming it up."

Black eyed peas!

The leaves have opened up quite nicely and so it was the right time to try a taste!

We had a good look at the sprouts before we ate. We noted the roots, the original pea and the new leaves.

We did some (volunteer only) mindful tasting:

"They are crunchy."

"They are kinda sweet."

"They are yucky."

"It was really yummy."

K is for kite.
We made some lovely paper kites.

We read Stone Soup. It is amazing what can happen when we work together with kind hearts.

Continuing our learning about keeping kind hearts, kind words and kind thoughts, we brainstormed what each one looks and sounds like.

All week we are taking turns planting our baby plants. If you remember, (Nov 30th blog post) we separated the baby plants from the parent plant. The roots have been growing and now they are ready to plant in their very own home!

We are making observations of how the roots look.

Then we are planting them in the pots we painted last week.

We complete our observations by drawing a picture of our baby plant in their new home.

We read Pumpkin Soup. Each of the friends has a special job in making the soup. Can you remember the cat's job? the squirrel's job? The duck's job?

 Happy Monday Everyone!

In our classroom, the educator team have been noticing some "hands-on" behaviours and some unkind words among classmates. We are hoping to nip these surfacing behaviours in the bud and your support at home would be most appreciated.

One approach we are taking is the "kind hearts, kind words, kind thoughts" reminder.

We are working towards keeping kind hearts, kind words and kind thoughts at the forefront throughout the day.

Our letter  of the week is the letter Kk

Continuing with our long-term inquiry around food, it is soup week.

Our core text is Community Soup.

The children and their teachers make a soup together from the community garden.

Our drama center combines our two themes for the week  - A Soup Kitchen!

Black -eyed peas update:

The leaves are growing! They are just about ready to sample.

 Happy Friday!

We started the day by checking in on our black eyed peas.

There are roots growing!

We noticed that new colours are appearing; yellow and green.

I will take them home for the weekend to keep the water fresh.

Perhaps Monday we will be able to have a taste?

For Jj week we worked on making the letter J. We practiced both uppercase and lowercase.

Since we heard the Hogtown Brass yesterday, I chose Listen to My Trumpet as our fun Friday book.

Gerald learned Piggy isn't trying to make music after all! Can you tell your family at home what she was trying to sound like?

Thursday, 2 March 2023

We were so lucky to have the opportunity to hear the Hogtown Brass Quintet this morning.

We learned about the instruments - trumpet, French horn, trombone and tuba.

What a beautiful day for outdoor learning!

In connection to our food inquiry we took the opportunity to do some outdoor cooking - snow ice cream!

Here is the procedure we took: (we are working on sequencing and procedure - first, then, last)

First we put sweetened condensed milk in a bowl.

Then we added 6 cups of snow.
(don't worry! we found pristine snow that nobody has stepped on)

If you try this at home, you can add flavour chocolate? vanilla?

Stir....

Last (and best part) taste!

Update: Black- Eyed Peas

We continued our daily observations.
We noticed that roots and shoots are growing!

We continue to make predictions as to what will happen next.

"I think the sprout will be purple because I see some purple parts."
